SPRING TERM 2022

The Fens

To be able to travel in time through our Fens, from the ancient marshy wilderness it once was to its modern, drained efficiency, would be fascinating indeed. The Fens have seen it all; invasion, flood, famine, fire, plague and the changing will of many masters.

Diane Calton Smith, local historian and author of Fenland History and Mystery books, will give a series of talks which explore different eras of our local history. From King John and the medieval hospitals to the time of Thomas Clarkson, she takes us on a journey through time.

ONE OFF SUMMER LECTURE The Lecture Society was 100 years old last year. To celebrate we were going to have a one off lecture on Thursday 18th June 2020. This was to be given by Francis Pryor. Francis is a well known author, prehistorian, presenter and farmer who has worked at Flag Fen and appeared on television's Time Team. Unfortunately because of Covid 19 that had to be postponed.

As previously we arrange a varied programme where course work is optional - just enjoy the lectures!

Downham Market Lecture Society is committed to offering its members excellent courses in a wide range of topics. If you are an experienced, innovative and enthusiastic speaker who can deliver a series of lectures or a 'one-off' topic please contact us.
